I know you are not supposed to talk about politics or religion, but than I would have nothing to talk about. I read this story of a Pastor leading the charge of donating a nativity scene to the local library because they are displaying a menorah. They are also displaying a Christmas Tree as well. My question to you:
- Is Displaying a Nativity Scene the Same as Displaying a Menorah?
Definitions of a Menorah:
- (Judaism) a candelabrum with seven branches used in ceremonies to symbolize the seven days of Creation
Definition of Nativity Scene:
- A nativity scene is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.
I look at these definitions and I see with the Menorah that it is a celebration of lights and the creation of the world in 7 days which most people no matter what religion they are believe in.
I look at the nativity scene and I see the birth of Jesus which Christians believe in, but many other religions do not.
It appears to me that the Nativity Scene is a religious display and a Menorah is a symbol more associated with the Christmas Tree.
Definition of a Christmas Tree:
- The Christmas tree is one of the most popular traditions associated with the celebration of Christmas
I know people are very sensitive to this subject, but can't we all just get along. Many people of faith I believe are a little hypocritical in the sense of how they live their lives and react to certain situations and how the religion they believe in tells them how to lead their life. For instance people who are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Catholic, and other religions believe in the utmost of modesty and humbleness. However, many people who tend to be religious as a society try and tell each other what they should believe in because that is what we do believe in. Kind of transferring if we believe it than everyone should believe it.
We need to be able to get along, and every religion should display their celebration, but I believe religious symbols, Not tradition symbols, should not be displayed in government or public places.
What are your thoughts?

I believe that we should have respect for what ever religion that our friends believe in. If you wish to display a Menorah and I wish to display a Nativity that great it's your right. Neither should be offended by each others belief.
Diane, thank you for your comment. Great point. I guess my question to you would be if I displayed a menorah at my office, and you worked for me would you demand i also display a nativity scene?
No, I would think you were doing what your heart told you to do. You have every right to display what you want.
Diane, I totally agree with you. I would also say that people get way too sensitive during the holiday time including me.
David, it would be nice if people practiced what they preached and were respectful of other views. There are an estimated 10,000 distinct religions in the world but only about 20 major groups. With every group thinking it's view is right there is little wonder, in my opinion, why people can't or don't get along and it's also a good reason for religion and politics not to be a part of this on line community.
I don't have a problem talking about religion as long as we can all be respectful of the philosophy of others. But this can never be as long as there are doctrines out there that claim "their religion is the only acceptable one" or call for the death of those individuals that don't believe in their system.
I don't intend to share my philosophy here as few, I think, would agree. What I will share is that I think I'm a good person who will go out of my way to help others. I will not knowingly hurt anyone and will take responsibility for my own actions. I believe in treating others as I would like to be treated...mostly with respect and kindness...at least until you have proved else wise and then would rather not deal with you at all.
Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season and new year.
Nick, excellent points, and if everyone had your attitude everyone would get along. I am not trying to say my religious view is the only view. I genuinely want to know why people of the Christian faith believe that the nativity scene is the same as a menorah. I am not trying to offend anyone. I like to hear the other side. There are always 2 sides, and an intelligent person sees themself in you. I am trying to be that person
I am Jewish and I beg to differ with you. There are two definitions for a Menorah. The nine branched Menorah is used for Hanukah, not a seven branched. The nine branches represent the eight days the oil burned, and the ninth is the shamas for lighting the other. A seven branched menorah is used or was used in the old Temple. Big difference in the Menorahs here. The 7-branch menorah is made according to the commandment in Exodus 25:31-40 and it can NOT be used during Hanukah.
